YOU HAVE TWO OPTIONS:
Examine the way a news organization has crafted the visual collective memory of an event with major social/cultural/political implications. This should be a big event, such as the New York Times’s commemoration of the end of World War II on major anniversaries (2005 and 2015) or CNN’s commemorative coverage of the 40th anniversary of the first moon landing. You should rely on a trustworthy encyclopedia to get the ‘facts’ of your event.
You’ll be analyzing your findings both in terms of photography as practice and photography as symbol. As practice, I want you to consider the processes that the photographers of these scenes navigated: that is, the extra-media, ideological, routine, and individual interferences that shaped the pictures they took and that, as a result, ended up in the mass media. As symbols, I’d like you to draw on class readings to explain why the visual “memories” look the way they do. Perhaps a certain group is ‘forgotten,’ another is ‘remembered,’ or a handful of iconic images emerge (or don’t!).
Choose a story and a news organization and do a deep dive into the representation of a given group. You might consider, for instance, how men are represented by the NYT on the most recent anniversary of 9/11. Or, how has the Chicago Tribune visualized/represented trans people over the past 2 years. Then, evaluate the stakes around this representation. Why does the way that this group is represented, specifically in this story, matter? Does it confirm what you would expect to see, according to the literature?
I REALLY LOVE THE FIRST OPTION AND THE FIRST MOON LANDING EVENT, BUT IF YOU ARE INTERESTED AND CAN WRITE A BETTER PAPER ON ANOTHER TOPIC, FEEL FREE!
I ATTACHED IMAGES OF TWO READINGS FROM CLASS– THE FIRST IS ABOUT COLLECTIVE MEMORY AND THE SECOND IS ABOUT THE 7 TYPES OF FORGETTING, WHICH I THINK WOULD BE GREAT READINGS TO GATHER IDEAS FROM
THE ATTACHMENTS MAY BE OUT OF ORDER, BUT THE FIRST ONE IS IMG_9507, AND THEN THE FOLLOWING NUMBERS AFTER THAT.
PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF YOU HAVE DIFFICULTY READING THE PICTURES, I WILL DO MY BEST TO GET TOU WHAT YOU NEED
ALSO, PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHICH MASS MEDIA EVENT YOU DECIDE ON DOING IF IT IS NOT THE MOON LANDING EVENT
THANK YOU SOOOOOO MUCH!!!!!!
