T‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌hink of an object from the world around you that has a particular meaning or personal value to share with the class, one that holds particular significance. My choice of creator, artist and visionary is the legendary Keith Harring and his mural “Crack is Wack”. This mural is located on 128th street and Franklin D. Roosevelt East River Drive, handball courtyard in New York City. This work of art was created in 1986 and speaks to millions everyda‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌y as you drive by, about a community in crises at the time ravaged and falling prey to the unforgiving, non-discriminating power of crack cocaine. I should know because I was one of its victims at that time. This mural portrays and depicts death, money, cost, sadness, pain and the struggle our community suffers from this drug. Big bright colors, still figures and the in-your-face wording “Crack is Wack” just reminds everyone everyday who drives by the expressway or plays handball on the courtyard that this silent killer was and is real, affecting everyone we love in so many ways. Deep in meaning but beautiful to the eye. The artistry was undeniable as this piece of art showcases depth and creativity. Keiths usage of simplicity did not need a face to show emotion, meaning or Identity. I still drive by whenever I have a chance to visit home. This art piece reminds me of a time when I was lost. Now I can see the beauty without feeling the pain. It’s a reminder for me of how frail life is and how lucky I was to survive. To my Friend Keith Harring, now you paint our heavens, but here on earth you are missed and always will be remembered‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌.

Annotated Outline
Before you start your zine, you are required to complete an annotated outline.
You will be creating this annotated outline on a google doc or word document (not a PDF because it’s harder to comment on). This should be about 1 page long, no more than 2 pages. An annotated outline consists of :
Theme/topic of your zine:
Your topic must be related to the course topic: Gender, Race, and Popular Culture.
You can either choose to focus on one of the units we covered in class or you can write about another subtopic.
List 3-course sources and 1 external source (4 to‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌tal).
For each source describe why and how these are relevant to your project. Sources can include literature, media, art, films etc
Source 1:
Source2:
Source3:
Source4:
Sections/pages: These can be key points/takeaways, particular quotes, images, moments, people, videos, etc that you wish to highlight.
These do not have to be the final version, this is just a brainstorming of what you want your zine to look like and what you want to include, you can change these later.
I just want you to have an idea of the overall flow of your story.
Make sure to also include an introductory overview of the topic of your choice.
You may choose to end the zine with a personal reflection on how learning about these chosen topics relates to your own everyday l‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌ife

You will write 1000 words or more (excluding MLA formatting/documentation) on the following topic:
Choose and attend a cultural experience you have NOT encountered before. It must be a single cultural event that is NOT a museum visit. This could be any of the following:
a religious service of a faith to which you don’t belong or haven’t experienced
an ethnic restaurant that serves a type of cuisine you have not tried before in a cultural setting
a festival or event that highlights some aspect of culture you haven’t experienced
a concert or other live performance of a type of music, dance, or other form of Humanities expression (i.e., a lecture, a poetry slam, a live art demo, a street performance)
VIRTUAL ALTERNATIVE: Google a YouTube video, use the resources linked in this module, or find a live streaming performance of a religious service/ritual, cultural event, or a concert of a type of music you haven’t attended before. Include the video or web page as part of your paper. This does NOT count toward the minimum required class materials sources. You can also get takeout from a restaurant with cuisine you haven’t experienced before if you can see the inside of the restaurant and/or talk with the owner, an employee, or someone else you know who has experience with the culture.
Examine this cultural event in light of spirituality and religion as applicable and think about related materials from class. In what ways do you see the values being portrayed? What did you s‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌ee, hear, smell, taste, touch? How did you feel? How did others actively involved experience the scene? How does what you experienced relate to what you learned in class? What does it teach you about Humanities? You must have this experience during the semester. It cannot be a previous experience.
You must include at least three disciplinary sources from class materials: at least one from literature, at least one from philosophy/theology, and at least one from fine arts (music, art). Use only sources from the course materials or an official website for the experience (i.e., a restaurant website or a website for a house or worship or an artist). Contact me for approval of other sources. You cannot earn a grade higher than “C” if you use unapproved sources.
Your essay must use MLA format and documentation, both in-text and works cited. Remember in-text includes framing, context, credibility, and parenthetical documentation (the latter only if it’s a print source). The Works Cited page must be the last page of your paper, NOT a separate file. The 1000-word minimum does NOT include the MLA “Works Cited” page. Refer to the sample MLA paper link and the in-text documentation file. The file must be in pdf, doc, or docx format. Use “Save” as in your word processing program to find the correct file type. No APA formatting/documentation.
Turnitin is enabled for this assignment.
